What do lobbyists do? This was the subject of my presentation to the Nevada Youth Legislature(NYL) training last month. I was joined by my colleagues Alfredo Alonso and Rebecca Gasca who shared their perspectives about the legislative process.
Thanks to Senator Valerie Wiener, this was the 4th year that I had the opportunity to address the youth legislators. Created in 2007, the NYL is comprised of 21 high school age students, each appointed for a two year term by a Nevada senator. Learning about lobbying is just a small component of the training these "legislators" receive. During an activity packed two days, these lucky students interact with Senators and Assembly members, a Supreme Court Justice and even dine at the Governor's mansion.
The NYL is responsible for evaluating and commenting on issues important to our youth. It is a unique opportunity for Nevada's young leaders to learn about, affect, and serve our state government.
Congratulations to Senator Wiener for creating such a wonderful program.
